Creating and Living With Purpose
The Emotional Life
When life presents us with trials and tribulations, we are often met and engulfed by a difficult emotion. In these moments we have a tendency to lose sight of the bigger picture or the true value of the emotional response as a universal messenger and teacher. We get pulled under the proverbial "wave" as we fight, reject and deny ourselves in our reactions. But we can we create something constructive out of these emotions. This is the basis of the intention behind the art of emotional alchemy.
Why is Emotional Alchemy Beneficial?
As human beings we can experience a range of emotions as broad as the spectrum of colors itself. Some colors are glorious and vibrant, others mellow and soft, and some that are neon warning signs that send us running. For the emotions that we struggle with in particular, wouldn’t it be useful to have a way to view them in a way that allows you to understand, respect and utilize them as a positive force for yourself? This is the most desirable and extremely attainable purpose of emotional alchemy.
What is the Origin of Alchemy?
Alchemy is the process of changing the nature of something, such as a base matter like lead, into gold. The transmuting (changing) of metals is an alchemic process that operates on physical levels in the outer world. Clearly there are also parallels in our inner emotional world. Emotional alchemy is a process whereby we can convert an emotion into something of greater value for us. In doing this we take back our power over our own mind and our perception of the world around us. in realizing that our perceptions control our reality we are given back the crown to the kingdom of the mind that we have been gifted with in this life.
Emotions as the Messenger of the Universe: Your Reflection
The first step is to see our emotions as messengers, guides and teachers. They are of immense value and provide us with valuable information and feedback about our interactions with the world, as well as, giving us the opportunity to mold the world around us. For example; Anger may mean that our standards feel as though they have been violated. Guilt may indicate that we have been in breach of our own self standards. Anxiety is a way of alerting us to a perceived "danger". These emotions are part of our earthy survival kit and are based in our animalistic natures as corporeal beings. They are there to help us shape and craft the experience's of our lives and the lives of others. When we are "out of balance" the messenger can be over zealous or "off kilter", and we find ourselves responding very intensely or inappropriately to situations with little or no control of our responses. In these moments we become puppets to our emotions instead of intentional crafters and creators of the universe as we are intended to learn how to be in this life. There is value in assessing how you are responding to things and noticing how reliable, biased or true your messengers seem to be. We can also get very caught up in the form the messenger takes. Seeing the emotion as the end point rather than as a signpost.
Learning Not to "Shoot the Messenger"
We live in a world that seems determined to carry on regardless of how we externally intend to change and control it and others in it. Avoiding, dodging and denying our messengers to the point where even if they could speak the lesson plainly to us, we could not perceive it. More often than not, our ego receives information as a personal attack on the self instead of a reflection of the world we have been creating in our mind. Once you are able to release your ego from the perceptions that it is being intentional hurt by others and that others are merely reflecting your internal world back to you, you will be able to unify your heart and mind in response. You will no longer feel the need to "react" and "shoot the messenger" because you will be seeing yourself in the messenger. Keeping an eye and an ear open for our internal reflections of self allows us to benefit from this stream of information. We can then make use of it and begin learning how to craft a world we truly wish to live in.
Converting Emotional "Coal" into "Diamonds"
Understanding that emotions are teachings and not affronts to our ego allows you to value them differently. To see them as informational, important and worth listening to, just as we would ideally with symptoms of the physical body guiding towards our self-care. With Intense and challenging emotions this becomes more difficult and the message can be obscured making it more difficult to perceive. Regardless, it becomes our responsibility to interpret and positively mold the emotional information once we allow it in to our "kingdom" of the mind. We must learn how to pause, listen and allow ourselves to perceive the true message of what the universe is showing us in each moment. This is not necessarily a navel-gazers charter. The intention is to be able to consider/ perceive the message in the emotion so as to be able to move through and beyond it constructively. Actively using it to enjoy and move forwards in our lives. This is, of course, easier said than done and requires active practice and participation by the individual.
The Process
1. Notice your emotions and the patterns around the emotions you find difficult.
2. When you experience that emotion press the pause button if you possibly can.
Focusing on your breath can be a good way to bring yourself into the moment so you can observe what is happening for you.
That moment in which we pause is powerful – it expands our range of choices of how we think, feel and behave.
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom" – Viktor E. Frankl
3. View the emotion as a message – explore what the information might be.
4. Use the energy of the emotion to fuel positive action – exercise, making a change, etc.
5. See the emotion and its message(s) as the beginning of a pathway that can allow you to experience life and grow constructively.
Using our emotions resourcefully is one of many ways in which we can enjoy and manifest a positive inner transformation.

Understanding, Defining and Establishing the Language of Spirit to the Universe
Once we fully understand and accept the concept that we are constantly co-creating reality and that the reality we live in is the Universe's way of reflecting our internal mind and imaginative processes back to us, we begin to understand that, just a child must learn to crawl - then walk - then talk etc., we too must make the effort to understand the language of Universe (as a mirror of our mind) and begin to define the things that come into our reality by the relationship of our thoughts to the things that we experience in the material world. The first thing you must understand is that regardless of whether or not you are happy about your reality you must take the responsibility to know that the Universe is constantly trying to deliver to you it's perception of what we "want" from reality. Every thought which you give your time and attention to is a message from your spiritual center of creation to the Universe about what you want to occur for you. If you don't like the reality you are experiencing or you feel that your thoughts and imagination are not manifesting in the way you hoped that they would, it is merely an opportunity for you to do the work required to establish better communication between yourself, your Spirit and the Universe. To begin with, it is important for you to build an awareness of the current forms by which your spirit and the universe have been processing and providing reflective feedback into your reality. For example. next time you experience a particular emotion, take a moment to stop and be fully aware of your environment and what is happening in it. As you begin to do this more often you will likely start to notice a pattern of particular objects, words, numbers, colors, people, animals, environments etc. existing in your reality in relationship to that particular thought pattern or emotion. This is the first step to rebuilding the language between you and the universe. You must first understand the existing language before you can build upon or transform it for your personal use and benefit. Take Back Control Of Your Mind: Awareness of Thoughts - Where Do You Spend Your Time & Attention?
One of the first things you must take conscious responsibility for is your thought patterns. Once you realize that negative or "unkind" thoughts manifest and reflect back to us negatively and in a way which we often don't enjoy you must begin to ask yourself why you are choosing to create a reality for yourself and others that is from a negative and non-loving center. More pointedly, you need to ask yourself why you are you are constantly choosing to be "mean" to yourself in your own mind instead of spending your time and attention on thoughts and potential realties that will make you happy. For many, this starts as a realization that worrying about something bad happening instead of spending your time and attention on visualizing what you actually want to happen is the choice between self created harm and self created happiness. Once you become aware of these self harming thought patterns you realize that every thought you have is a choice between love and fear. When you choose to think from a place of unconditional love ( whether for yourself or others) versus a place of fear you will undoubtedly garner positive results. When you choose to perceive reality from a place of fear or negative energy you, more often than not, generate negative or adverse results in your reality.
Example: You have a friend who receives some news that they might have a severe illness but the doctor needs to run further tests.
Uncontrolled Negative Thought Patterns:
The average person would spend the majority of their mind's time and attention on this matter centered around worrying about all the potential negative and undesirable results. The unaware/ uncontrolled mind starts to spend its energy and imaginative centers seeing a future they don't actually want to bring into reality.
Controlled Positive Visualizations
Instead, you can utilize your conscious awareness and choose to spend your time and attention visualizing and imagining a reality where your friend receives the "all clear" from the doctor and goes on living a happy, healthy life. By doing this you are basing your thoughts or "requests" to the Universe in a place of love and positivity instead of fear.
